Does Your Computer Need Glasses?

If you are over age 40, you may be experiencing the effects of presbyopia on your eyesight. Presbyopia is the gradual stiffening of the eye lens that makes it more difficult for the eyes to focus on near objects. This condition happens to almost everyone as they age (even if you’ve had successful LASIK vision correction surgery) and is the reason why so many adults need reading glasses to read things like menus, books, tablets, computers and smart phones clearly.

But what if your computer screen wore your glasses for you?

Researchers at UC Berkeley are developing a technology that may, in essence, create glasses for your computer, tablet or other type of screen. They have developed a prototype of a vision-correcting display using a printed pinhole screen in between two layers of clear plastic to enhance image sharpness. The “computation” technique distorts the screen image based on each user’s unique visual impairment, allowing the image to look clear for that individual. The ultimate goal is to reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contacts to read displays on screens.

Will this technology eventually replace LASIK in Lake Dillon? Probably not, because LASIK not only corrects farsightedness; it also corrects nearsightedness and astigmatism. However, it may help those individuals who have had successful LASIK surgery reduce their need for reading glasses later in life when presbyopia creeps in – at least when looking at displays. Time will tell.

If you are experiencing any changes in your vision or want to reduce your dependence on glasses or contacts, contact Lake Dillon Eye Care at 970-468-0389 or lakedilloneye.com to schedule an eye exam or a free LASIK Consultation in Lake Dillon.

KaChoo! Is it a Cold or the Flu?

You know the feeling. It starts with a slight tickle in your throat, or the feeling that something “isn’t quite right.” Then…boom! You’re sick.

But how do you know if you have a common cold or the full-blown flu?

The flu typically comes on fast, while a cold can start slowly and gradually become worse. The symptoms of each condition are different, too.

Cold Symptoms
  • Nasal congestion
  • Runny nose
  • Sneezing
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  •  Itchy throat
  • Fatigue
  • Mild cough

A cold typically lasts about three days, but congestion may continue a week or more. Sometimes cold complications develop, which can lead to sinus infections, bronchitis, ear infections or asthma attacks.

Flu Symptoms
  • High fever
  • Extreme muscle aching over your entire body
  • Major fatigue
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Nasal discharge
  • Dry cough
  • Vomiting or stomach pain (in children)

Flu symptoms can last one to two weeks. Flu complications can lead to pneumonia, dehydration, sinus infections, ear infections, hospitalization or even death.

Whether you have the cold or flu, these illnesses can wipe you out and zap your strength. When you are sick, the last thing you want to worry about is fumbling for glasses to read medication bottles or make your way to the restroom in the middle of the night. Successful LASIK vision correction in Lake Dillon can help to minimize – or even eliminate – those added discomforts when you are ill. LASIK works by using a laser to correct your specific refractive error that causes blurry vision at near, distant or all vision distances. If you are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism in Lake Dillon LASIK might be right for you.

It is estimated that between 5% - 20% of people in the United States get the flu every year, and it’s safe to say that a large majority of those people wear corrective lenses. Flu season starts in the fall and really gains strength in January and February. But this pesky virus can continue wreaking havoc well into the spring months.

The flu is spread when flu germ droplets land on you via coughs, sneezes or by touching a surface that is laced with the virus. These germ droplets can be anywhere: on shopping cart handles, school desks, phones, books, door handles, etc. The flu virus can live on hard surfaces up to eight hours! To minimize your risk of getting the flu, keep your distance from people who are sick, frequently wash your hands and avoid touching your mouth, nose or eyes.

Your best defense against the flu? Get a flu vaccine! Seasonal flu vaccines work by causing antibodies to grow in the body two weeks after vaccination. This year’s vaccines protect against three types of viruses. The type of protection included in each year’s vaccination is different to keep up with the changing flu viruses. The flu vaccine is available as a flu shot or as a nasal spray.

Your best defense against blurry vision caused by a refractive error? Get LASIK in Lake Dillon at Lake Dillon Eye Care! Our LASIK technology helps most patients achieve 20/20 vision, but the procedure is not right for everyone. Our doctors can determine if you are a good candidate for LASIK through a comprehensive eye exam.

Contact Lake Dillon Eye Care today to schedule a free LASIK Consultation…before flu season knocks you down. You can call 970-468-0389 or schedule an appointment anytime day or night by visiting lakedilloneye.com.

Eyeglasses for Eyestrain

If you work long hours at a computer, you are probably no stranger to eye strain in Lake Dillon. This is an actual condition called computer vision syndrome (CVS) that can cause blurry vision, eye irritation, headaches neck pain and back pain.

Causes of Computer Vision Syndrome

CVS is like a repetitive stress injury that can worsen over time.
  • Looking down at the keyboard and then back up to the monitor strains the eye muscles due to the constant shift of focus.
  •  If you choose not to wear your prescription lenses as you work (to correct nearsightedness or astigmatism), you will be forced to strain to see the monitor clearly.
  • If you do not keep your lens prescription up-to-date, you may be adding to the eye strain.
  •   The onset of presbyopia (the need for reading glasses) beginning around age 40 can make it more difficult to focus on the computer monitor.
  •  Workstations that are not ergonomically-designed may cause you to crane your neck, slouch or arrange your body in an awkward position to compensate.

Look cool in your cubical!

Special computer glasses featuring lens coatings and tints that reduce glare can help to reduce the symptoms of CVS. These glasses can be purchased in non-prescription versions or in versions that support your specific refractive error. Before you invest in these glasses, be sure to read reviews online so you can make the best decision; these glasses don’t work for everyone.

Not surprisingly, prescription computer glasses cost more than non-prescription glasses. And if your prescription changes frequently, you will need to invest in new glasses regularly.
One way to combat the ongoing expense of glasses, contact lenses and cleaning solutions is by investing in the one-time cost of LASIK vision correction in Lake Dillon. Our doctors at Lake Dillon Eye Care can determine if your eyes are right for LASIK during a free LASIK Consultation.

Other Ways to Control Eyestrain

  •  Every 20 minutes on the computer look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This is known as the 20-20-20 rule.
  • Set a timer to remind yourself to take breaks from your screen (it’s easy to lose track of time when you are focused!)
  • Identify and implement the right ergonomics for your computer workstation by visiting the OSHA website.
  • Adjust the brightness and contrast of your computer monitor and reduce the glare on your screen from lights or windows.

20/20 doesn’t mean an end to 20-20-20

Even if you have a successful LASIK procedure at Lake Dillon Eye Care and achieve 20/20 vision, it’s still important to practice the 20-20-20 rule! CVS can affect anyone who sits in front of a computer for long periods of time.

To learn more about blade-free LASIK in Lake dillon and find out about 0% LASIK financing, contact Lake Dillon Eye Care today at 970-468-0389 or lakedilloneye.com to schedule a free LASIK Consultation.

LASIK: The Jelly Club Alternative

gift lasik

Your loved ones probably don’t want a “one year membership in the jelly-of-the-month club” this holiday…

And let’s face it: there are only so many bathrobes, coffee mugs, neckties and kitchen appliances a person needs. If you have a loved one who wears glasses or contacts, give the best gift ever this year: LASIK vision correction in Dillon, Colorado.

“Clark, that’s the gift that keeps on givin’ the whole year.” – Cousin Eddie from National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Cousin Eddie was right! LASIK can reduce or eliminate your need for glasses or contacts by slightly changing the shape of the cornea so light focuses properly on the retina (the back of the eye). Some people can even achieve 20/20 vision after LASIK, allowing them to…
  • Work
  • Play sports
  • Watch movies
  • Shop
  • Read
  • Wake up in the morning
…without the hassles of corrective lenses…all year long.

Every potential patient must have a proper LASIK Consultation to confirm candidacy for this popular procedure (there is no other way to know for sure). Lake Dillon Eye Care offers free LASIK Consultations in Dillon to help jump start this process. You can schedule an appointment for your loved one (or yourself) online at lakedilloneye.com or by calling 970-468-0389.

You may be thinking that LASIK is too extravagant a gift. But with 0% LASIK financing options available, this becomes a very affordable option. During the Consultation you will find out exactly how much the procedure will cost.

Imagine the look on your loved one’s eyes when they open the gift of better vision this holiday! Contact our doctors to mark one more shopping item off your “to do” list this holiday.

Lose the Selfie Glare

glasses glare

Can you snap a selfie anytime, anywhere…without having to reposition your head to lose the “selfie glare?”

If you wear glasses to correct your nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, you have probably had to re-take your selfies several times to actually see your eyes behind the lenses. Glare from glasses in photos can take the focus from your beautiful/handsome face and can ruin your photos.

Of course, one way to combat the selfie glare is to remove your glasses entirely. But if you don’t want the hassle of “preparing” for photos every time or losing the spontaneity of selfies, you may want to consider LASIK in Dillon, CO.

The science and technology behind LASIK incorporates lasers to reshape the cornea so light can be properly focused on the back of the eye (the retina) and clear vision can be achieved. It’s an amazingly quick procedure that can be completely customized for every unique eye. Many patients achieve 20/20 vision after LASIK, which means no more glasses in selfies (maybe just sunglasses).

Not every person who wears glasses is a good candidate for LASIK. You have to have the right corneal thickness, refractive measurement and good eye health for the procedure to be effective. No one (not even an eye doctor) can just look at your eyes to determine this; you need to have a comprehensive exam by a trained ophthalmologist.

The doctors at Lake Dillon Eye Care offer free LASIK Consultation to help patients learn about LASIK and find out if 20/20 vision from LASIK is a possibility. They can also discuss LASIK financing options in Dillon to make the procedure affordable. To schedule your no-obligation appointment, call 970-468-0389 or visit lakedilloneye.com.

Eye Makeup Safety

lasik old makeup

Are you putting bacteria on your eyes?

Studies have shown that in as little as 3-months, bacteria can grow in mascara, eye shadow, eyeliners and more, leading to eye infections such as pink eye, dry eye, loss of eyelashes and more.

If just the thought of bacteria on your eyes makes you shudder, consider this: Makeup has expiration dates. Unfortunately, those expiration dates are NOT printed on the containers, tubes and sticks. It’s up to you to keep track of when you purchase cosmetics and toss them after a certain timeframe.

Eye infections can be avoided by following these safety tips:
  • Purchase new mascara and liquid eyeliner every 3 months; eye shadow every 12 months; eye pencil every 24 months
  • Do not share eye makeup with friends
  • Avoid using samples in stores
  • Do not apply eyeliner to the inner eye lash lines
  • Do not wear mascara that flakes
  • Close eye makeup containers tightly
  • If you wear contact lenses, put them in before applying eye makeup
  • Remove eye makeup at night (remove contact lenses first)

One way to avoid the “contact lens eye infection” trap is by having LASIK vision correction in Dillon, CO to reduce or eliminate your dependence on contacts for clear vision. Of course, even if you achieve clear vision through LASIK, it will become even more important to protect your investment in your vision by practicing safe eye makeup application.

You may be tempted to hang on to eye makeup longer than the recommended timeframe because it can be quite expensive. However, when you consider the cost of treatment for eye infections and the potential for damaged vision, it will be more cost-effective to pay attention to how long your eye products stay in your makeup bag.

If you love wearing eye makeup, but your eyes are hidden behind corrective lenses, contact the doctors at Lake Dillon Eye Care to discuss the option of LASIK for your unique eyes. They offer a free LASIK Consultation to analyze your eyes and answer all of your questions about this popular vision procedure. To schedule your no-obligation appointment, call 970-468-0389 or visit lakedilloneye.com.

Keep Your Eyes Safe in the Kitchen

kitchen eye injury

At Lake Dillon Eye Care,we have helped thousands of people achieve lens-free vision through laser vision correction. And while our LASIK in Dillon, Colorado allows most of our patients to toss out their glasses, we encourage those patients to protect their new-found clear vision by wearing protective safety glasses when performing certain activities.

Most people know that safety glasses are important when playing contact sports, using power tools or working in the yard. But did you know that they are also important in the kitchen?

According to WebMD, almost half of the annual 2.5 million eye injuries occur in and around the home…and more than 40% of those happen during everyday activities like cooking. (Source: American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Ocular Trauma)

Potential Causes of Kitchen Eye Injuries
Your eye can become injured during food prep, oven and stove cooking and cleaning.
  • Cleaning chemical splatters
  • Grease/oil splatters
  • Champagne corks
  • Steam burns
  • Spicy juices, such as cutting jalapeños and touching your eyes
  • Oven heat
It may seem a bit silly to wear glasses in the kitchen, but whether you've invested in your vision through LASIK or already have excellent vision, you don’t want to risk your eyesight to a freak kitchen accident. Get a pair of protective glasses that are approved by the American National Standards Institute and get cooking!

Can Eye Exercises Improve Your Vision?

eye care lasik

If you have to wear corrective lenses to see clearly, you may be tempted to purchase eye exercise kits or start on an eye exercise regimen in order to reduce your need for glasses or contacts. The truth is that there has been no scientific evidence that eye exercises can improve your vision if you have:
  • Nearsightedness: good close-up vision but poor distance vision due to the shape of the cornea
  • Farsightedness: good distance vision but poor close-up vision due to the shape of the cornea
  • Astigmatism: blurry distance and close-up vision due to the shape of the cornea or lens
  • Presbyopia (the need for reading glasses): blurry close-up vision due to the loss of elasticity in the eye lens
There is no scientific research that clearly proves that eye exercises will change the shape of your cornea, the shape of your eye or restore flexibility to the eye lens.

Nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism are caused by a refractive error that can be corrected through laser procedures such as LASIK in Dillon, Colorado. This process uses a laser to alter the cornea’s shape so light is focused correctly on the back of the retina. Many patients can achieve 20/20 vision with this procedure.

LASIK, however, cannot fully correct presbyopia. Monovision LASIK is one alternative for presbyopia, which corrects one eye for distance vision and one eye for close-up vision.

Before you start an eye exercise program, consult with your eye doctor to make sure this is a safe alternative for vision improvement. If you are looking for a quicker and more effective method of vision correction, contact Lake Dillon Eye Care to schedule a free LASIK Consultation in Dillon to find out if your eyes are right for the procedure. Call 970-468-0389 or visit lakedilloneye.com to schedule an appointment online and take a free online LASIK Self-Evaluation.

2014 World Sight Day

Eye Exams

World Sight Day is October 9, 2014.  The call-to-action for this year’s observation is “No More Avoidable Blindness” and is part of an overall plan to reduce avoidable blindness by 25% by the year 2019. Created by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB), this initiative supports their overall theme of “Universal Eye Health” and protecting/preserving eyesight for people around the world.

In celebration of this event, Lake Dillon Eye Care is urging people to make their eye health atop priority by scheduling an eye exam in Dillon. We also encourage you to spread the word about the importance of regular eye exams. Often people neglect their eyesight – until they experience a problem. Regular eye exams can detect conditions that may be silently robbing you of your vision, such as glaucoma or cataracts, and eye doctors can even detect underlying health conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes or brain tumors.

During an eye exam, you may also learn that your eyes havethe right conditions for vision correcting procedures, such as LASIK vision correction. During a free LASIK Consultation, you can learn about the pros and cons of LASIK, how LASIK technologies differ and find out if 20/20 vision without glasses is a possibility.

Make the most of World Sight Day 2014. Schedule your eye exam or free LASIK Consultation in Dillon today by contacting Lake Dillon Eye Care at 970-468-0389 or lakedilloneye.com.

Serious Eye Conditions Growing in Young People

According to Medical News Today, a recent survey of optometrists has shown that the number of young people being diagnosed with serious eye conditions such as dry eye and blepharitis (inflammation of the eyelids) is growing. Many of these doctors were also concerned that certain sight-stealing vision conditions may be developing at a younger age:
  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Age-related macular degeneration
This phenomenon of deteriorating eye health may be due to any number of reasons, including:
  • Diabetes
  • Poor nutrition
  • Increased usage of computer, tablet or smart phone screens
  • Smoking
  • Lack of sunglasses
  • Improper contact lens usage
It’s important to note that even if you have your vision corrected through a procedure such as LASIK in Dillon, Colorado, and even if you achieve 20/20 vision after the procedure, it is still possible to develop serious eye conditions. Regular eye exams are vital to the overall health of your eyes because they can detect any“silent” problems that are developing so treatment options can be explored.

If you are experiencing any changes in your vision or would like to learn more about ways to protect and preserve your eyesight, contact Lake Dillon Eye Care at 970-468-0389 or lakedilloneye.com to schedule an eye exam in Dillon. Lake Dillon Eye Care also offers free LASIK Consultations to help patients reduce or eliminate the need for glasses or contacts.

Celebrate Comic Book Day with Superhero Vision

September 25 is National Comic Book Day. There are many genres of comic books from which to choose, such as superhero, manga, humor, science fiction/fantasy, horror, comics and more. People of all ages love comics because they have interesting characters, exciting story lines and detailed graphics.

Today comics are available electronically on tablets, websites and smart phones. But if you prefer the “old school” way of reading printed comics, and you are farsighted (meaning you see distant objects clearly but close-up objects are blurry), you probably have to wear glasses or contacts to read their fine print.

If you’re a comic book fan over age 21, wouldn’t it be great to pick up any comic, any time, day or night, and be able to read it? LASIK vision correction in Dillon, Colorado can correct farsightedness, allowing many patients to achieve 20/20 vision after the quick procedure. The LASIK process uses a laser to slightly alter the shape of the cornea with superb precision, allowing light to properly focus on the back of the eye (the retina). The actual procedure takes just a few minutes per eye, is virtually painless and most patients are back to work within a day or two.

Visit lakedilloneye.com or call 970-468-0389 to schedule your free LASIK Consultation or take the free online LASIK Self-Evaluation as a first step.

Pirates Don’t Wear Glasses

Blackbeard…Captain Kidd…Black Bart…Redbeard…even Jack Sparrow…

You’ll be hard-pressed to find a pirate who wore glasses (there were plenty of eye patches, though). Does that mean that all pirates had 20/20 vision? Probably not; but it’s safe to assume that pirates didn’t have access to good eye care.

Even if a pirate did manage to visit an eye doctor and find out his vision was less-than-perfect, the idea of wearing eye glasses wasn’t too appealing. (After all, a pirate had a reputation to uphold!) And LASIK vision correction wasn’t FDA-approved before the late 1990s, so all the gleamin’ booty in the world wouldn’t make that an option.

Why are we talking about pirates? September 19 is International Talk Like a Pirate Day! It’s a day for you to connect with your inner pirate and toss about a few “Aarrs” and “Blimeys” with friends, family and co-workers. You may even want to don an eye patch for the occasion. But if you have to wear glasses to correct your nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism, it will be almost impossible to look authentic with an eye patch over your glasses.

Avast! If you want to celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day by looking like a pirate (meaning, no glasses), find out if LASIK vision correction in Dillon is right for you. Call 970-468-0389 or visit lakedilloneye.com to schedule your free LASIK Consultation at Lake Dillon Eye Care.

Lake Dillon Eye Care won’t hornswaggle you with the cost of LASIK and they will even provide LASIK financing options to make better vision more affordable.

Get More Enjoyment from 3D Movies

Movies, televisions and even theme park rides in 3D really help to bring the action to life. Of course, in order to get the full effect of 3D experiences, the viewer must wear special 3D glasses. In fact, if you view a 3D movie without the glasses, the blurry image on the screen can be very uncomfortable on your eyes.

If you currently wear regular eyeglasses for nearsightedness (myopia) in Dillon, Colorado to see distant objects clearly, going to a 3D movie can be a real hassle. You have the options of:
  • Wearing 3D glasses over your regular eyeglasses (this is also uncomfortable)
  • Wearing contact lenses instead of your regular eyeglasses (although not everyone can wear contacts)
  • Purchasing special 3D clip on glasses that you wear over your regular eyeglasses to watch 3D movies (you have to remember to bring them with you)
  • Watching the alternate 2D version of movies instead of the 3D version (and miss out on some special effects)
  • Having LASIK vision correction to possibly correct your myopia and eliminate your need for glasses
The doctors at Lake Dillon Eye Care have performed thousands of LASIK procedures on myopic patients. While not all of them have been fans of 3D movies, they all wanted to find out what life could be like if they didn't have to wear glasses or contacts. Most of them didn't enter into the decision to have LASIK lightly. They researched the LASIK process in Dillon. Then they learned if their eyes were right for LASIK (through a free LASIK Consultation at Lake Dillon Eye Care) and interviewed our doctors extensively to make sure they have had the best experience, the best LASIK technologies and best “chair-side” manner.

There are a lot of 3D movies out now. If you would like to have a more enjoyable 3D experience, find out if Lake Dillon LASIK vision correction is right for you. Call us at 970-468-0389 or lakedilloneye.com.

What’s Living in Your Contact Lens Solution?

New research out of Liverpool has shown that a certain bacterial strain (Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain 39016) has the ability to survive in contact lens cleaning solutions for over four hours. Most other bacterial strains that were tested were killed within 10 minutes after being placed in the contact lens disinfectant solutions; this new strain is much more resilient and can cause more harm to contact wearers.

This bacterium can cause a condition called microbial keratitis, which is an ulceration and inflammation of the cornea that can lead to vision loss. Even before this research, LASIK has been reported to be up to 5 times safer for your eye health than wearing contact lenses; this may be one more motivating factor for contact lens wearers to consider LASIK vision correction in Lake Dillon.

If you are currently one of the 30 million Americans who wear contact lenses on a regular basis, you owe it to yourself to:

  • Ensure you are using the very best contact lens disinfectant solution available
  • Talk to your optometrist or ophthalmologist about contact lens safety
  • Let your eyes take a break from contacts occasionally – wear your prescription eyeglasses instead
  • Follow proper lens care practices for cleaning, disinfecting and storing your lenses (e.g., replacing your storage case every 3-6 months)
  • Schedule regular eye exams to ensure you are being proactive with your eye health
  • Schedule a LASIK Consultation in Lake Dillon  to learn about your vision correction options
Our doctors at Lake Dillon Eye Care provide free LASIK Consultations to help people find out if this procedure might give them the lens-free life they desire. Imagine: no worrying about bacteria in contact lens solutions; no hassling with taking your contacts out at night and taking proper care of your contacts; no dry or irritated eyes from contact lenses.

Call 970-468-0389 or visit lakedilloneye.com to schedule your free LASIK Consultation right now. Or take the first step by completing the quick online LASIKSelf-Evaluation.
